This is the story of the meeting between Lazzaro, a young farmer, and Tancredi, a young nobleman. Lazzaro's goodness is so pure that people often mistake it for simple-mindedness, while Tancredi is cursed by an excess of imagination. In their remote rural village of Inviolata, life is ruled by the fearsome Marchioness Alfonsina De Luna, the self-styled "Queen of Cigarettes." When Tancredi asks Lazzaro to help him stage his own kidnapping, a bond of loyalty is forged between the two. This strange and unlikely alliance proves to be a revelation for Lazzaro. Their friendship is so precious that it transcends time itself, setting Lazzaro on a journey in search of Tancredi — his first visit to a big city, where he wanders like a fragment of the past lost in the modern world.
