Border Town is the story of an old boatman and his granddaughter, Cuicui, who depend on each other. The two of them have been living a quiet and happy life together, guarding the ferry at a small crossing near Chadong in western Hunan. But when Cui Cui meets Shun Shun's two sons - Dai Lao and Er Lao - her quiet life begins to change. The brothers fall in love with Cui Cui's crystal eyes and innocent nature. Cui Cui is in love with Er Lao, but she can't even tell if she is in love with him. The old man asks the old boatman to marry him, but he gets no response. The two brothers go to a high cliff and sing for Cuicui to see who will win her heart. Their beautiful singing lifts Cuicui's soul from her dreams and floats her far away. Knowing that he is not as good a singer as his younger brother, Big Old Man is disillusioned and takes a boat down the river, where he drowns on a dangerous beach. Shun and his son blame the old boatman for the death of Big Elder, which makes the old boatman unhappy. The two old men are also upset by their brother's death and follow his example. Worried about Cuicui's marriage, the old boatman is tired of traveling and dies in a stormy night. Cuicui is left to guard the ferry and the man who left on the boat. The man may never come back, or he may come back "tomorrow"!
