The story of Li Qingshui, a woman in her thirties living in Shanghai, unfolds in reverse. Qingshui often feels that she and her husband are two people living side by side yet utterly disconnected. The loneliness of marriage, the weariness of her career, and her habit of bracing for troubles before they arrive hang over her life like storm clouds — and she finds herself growing more and more like her late mother. On the morning commute underground, in a taxi stuck on an elevated highway, on a bus heading back to her hometown, solitary Qingshui finds herself, in these plain and ordinary stretches of time, drifting back to the pivotal moments of her life — fragments of memory she cannot open up about to her husband or colleagues, laid out before us one by one. In searching through her past for comfort and redemption, she also searches for the courage and wisdom to return to the present.
